Makeup is one of those tricky things – new colours and looks come out every year, but if you’re not careful you will stick to your regular routine and before you know it your look will be dated and ill fated.

So, to keep up to date we regularly peruse the magazines and makeup counters to see what’s new.

Recently the folks over at Clarins hosted a “Red Carpet” event where the head makeup artist Phillipe was doing makeup for all the lucky ladies that were interested.

We hopped on the chair and tested out their newest look – very dark eye makeup where the liner goes slightly inside the lids. It seems a bit heavy but it actually looked great, and it was so much fun to have a different look! Forget the standard eyeliner and mascara, now I want the lovely shadows and peach blush!

Kevin O’Leary’s 5 Keys To Success: The Dragon Speaks Out!

November 18, 2010

Money, Work Life

Kevin OLeary

Kevin O’Leary is one of the most famous folks from Dragon’s Den. To put it mildly, he is definitely not afraid to share his opinions on pretty much everything – whether you asked him or not!

But, it’s that same brash personality that has made him a millionaire many times over.

So when someone who has succeeded and failed, and then succeeded again tells you 5 things you need to be successful, it’s definitely worth listening.

For entrepreneur week Kevin spoke at The Ted Rogers School of Management (Ryerson University) on Tuesday night, and here’s what he pinpointed as the 5 things you need to be successful.

1. You need to admit your weaknesses to yourself.

Only focus on your strengths, give someone else the work that you’re not good at. And you can’t be good at everything!

2. Communication Skills

You need the ability to stand up in front of a big crowd and share your vision with confidence, to articulate what you are trying to do, and inspire others to take action.

3. A Laser Focus On Shareholder Returns

Your bottom line should be your bottom line. As Kevin says “If you have to fire your mother, fire your mother”. It seems harsh, but it’s painfully true.

Here’s how Kevin put it, “If you’re an employee, the CEO is always looking for way to fire you, because you are a cost, and the CEO’s job is to cut costs and make more money”.

When he puts it that way it kind of makes sense, doesn’t it?

4. No conscience.

According to Kevin “You don’t make friends, you make money. If you have to, fire your best friend”.

When I raised this point to fellow entrepreneur he came back with an interesting story.

Brad mentioned “It makes sense. My best friend and I started a venture a few years back and decided to fire each other. We realized we were bringing the same things to the table rather than complementing each other as we always had outside of business. We each run our own successful biz’s today and remain best friends.”

That situation does take a lot of maturity, and also confidence to believe that you can do it all again.

But that’s the kind of belief you need to be a successful entrepreneur.
You need nerves of steel!

5. You need luck

Kevin believes there’s just something…an energy, or some sort of karma, that successful people have.

And that’s pretty true, too. Successful people inspire success. They are normally confident, and they normally have lots of interesting stories and they know how to embrace opportunity. Look at Kevin, he’s just got it. He’s crazy wealthy, but he’s smiling and having a good time during the presentation. He’s convinced all of us at the presentation that we can be successful!

That something, that luck/karma/energy….he’s just got it!

Prince William and Kate Middleton Set To Marry (& Why We Care)

November 16, 2010

Love & Sex

william_kate

We don’t really follow celebrity weddings, or royal weddings, or really anyone’s wedding, but we have to confess we’re thrilled about the wedding between William and Kate!

Why?

We’re so tired of all the crappy news about the economy, about rising debt, about bombs in Mexico and every other little depressing piece of news that gets beaten to death by the media.

Bring on the good news!

We want international news coverage of pretty dresses, fancy hats, nice finger foods, gorgeous shoes….all of it!

We want to have our minds focused on frivolous and pretty things – happy and positive things!

Every newspaper will cover every detail….and hopefully bad news will take a backseat for a few weeks!

Thank You William and Kate!

Favourite Fall Fashion Colours

November 15, 2010

Fashion/Beauty

This fall colour is in and a look through any fashion magazine, designer boutique or local mall will showcase the basic colours with a strong dash of statement colours.

Here’s what we’re loving

Red
This fall red is everywhere – from bright red accessories, to gorgeous red jackets, to shocking red lipstick. Red is so versatile and can be fun and playful but also serious and sexy – wear just a dash or go overboard with lots of red this season!

Purple
Purple is also super hot this season and we love it! Purple is subtle and sexy and really complimentary for most skin colours. There’s also a huge range of purples out there to enjoy – so everyone can find their favourite shade.

Other colours that are in this season include camel (not so exciting), metallics (we’re kind of tired of this trend) and olive greens(nice, but also safe and not exciting).

Fall Update: The Crazy Life Of A Budding Entrepreneur

November 9, 2010

Money, Work Life

juggling-woman

Wow, would be one word that would describe this fall. It has been totally crazy, and I love it!

Here’s what’s been happening:

- The business that I started 1 year ago has really taken off. When I started working for myself I was worried that I would make almost no money in the first year. So, I set my sights with a very moderate goal in mind -an income goal that was enough to make ends meet. One year in I’ve more than doubled the goal and the outlook for next year looks very promising!

- I hired someone to help me with my workload – saving me time to live a pretty normal life! When you start your own business you work like crazy. At a certain point you may even have no life. And that’s the point to step back. Why are you doing all this hard work anyway? To lead a better life, right? So I figured out what worked to get new business and keep clients happy – that’s my job. The other behind the scenes things that I don’t necessarily need to do all myself – I’ll got help with some of these. Freeing up more time for me to live an actual life! I no longer have to pass on every single invitation that comes my way!!

- We sold our condo. We live in a wonderful little condo with a view that is out of this world. The problem? It’s tiny!!! This condo is where my husband lived before we were together – it’s great for a bachelor, but not great for 2 people, especially when one of them works from home! So we put on the market, and started to look for a bigger place.

- The bigger place we bought was actually a house in the country! That’s right, a place in the country! We were originally looking for a house in downtown Toronto, but the prices were so high for something decent that we expanded our search, and by chance happened to find a gorgeous house on a nice piece of land in one of our favourite towns in the province. We went to see the place once, and bought it the next day.

- But we don’t plan on moving to the country full time, so we also rented a place in the city! Country bumpkins we are not, and while we love the idea of sitting by the fire, spending quality time in our peaceful house in the country, the reality is that we love the city life too, and the vast majority of our client meetings are downtown. So we’ll spend a few weekdays in the city attending to business, and then the rest of the time in the country.

To sum it all up things have been crazy, but good crazy!

For all of you out there that would love to start your own company and experience the freedom that comes with it. Just do it! Yes, it will be scary, yes there will be some risk involved, but just think of the rewards! Want to be able to spend time with your family and work in a fulfilling career – what’s stopping you? Want the freedom to travel for a month every summer to come back to a growing business – what’s stopping you?

There’s a beautiful life waiting out there for you.

What are you going to do about it?

November: The Month To Say No More

November 3, 2010

Wellbeing, Work Life

If you’re like most women, you naturally want to please people, and hve a hard time saying “no”.

This monh, we’re going to say “no” more, and we hope you join us.

1. Say no to anything that will not benefit you, your business and achieving your goals.

2. Commit to `no more’ procrastinating. Quit dilly dallying around – it’s time to take action.

That’s right, focus on what works for you, and focus on your goals. You don’t have to please people as much as you think, in fact you’ll be doing everyone a big favour if you focus on the things that work for you. You will achieve more, be more focused, feel great about yourself and when it works for you you’ll be in a better position to do things like help out others, but only if it works for you!

Enjoy saying “no” more this month!
